Driven by the fact that there has been stronger interaction between member countries of ASEAN and Japan, South Korea and China for the last twenty years, the University of Indonesia comes up with the idea of establishing Center for  East Asian Cooperation Studies (CEACoS) in May 24, 2004. In principle CEACoS is a think tank, aiming at promoting  policy oriented researches with special focus on improving economic, political, security and cultural cooperation    between countries and communities in East Asian region and how they relate to Indonesia. Establish as part of the  International Relations Department, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia, Center for East  Asian Cooperation Studies (CEACoS) is a policy research institution. The main activities of CEACoS are research,  publication and training. The Executive Director of CEACoS is appointed by the Dean of Faculty of Social and Political  Sciences, University of Indonesia for a term of three years.

The CEACoS is widely open to build cooperation with other research institutions and scholars both in Indonesia and  overseas who have great academic interests in studying and analyzing prospect of economic, security, political, and  cultural cooperation in the East Asian region. In Indonesia, CEACoS has built close academic linkage with Center for  International Relations Studies (CIRES), University of Indonesia; Center for Global Civil Society Studies (PACIVIS),  University of Indonesia; Center for Strategis and International Studies (CSIS) Jakarta;  Indonesia Institute of Sciences   (LIPI); The  Agency of Planning  and Development, Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia;  Center   for Southeast Asia Studies; Parahyangan Center for International  Studies (PACIS), Parahyangan University; Center for   East Asian Studies,  Gadjah Mada University; and Center for Regional Organizations Studies,  Airlangga University.   CEACoS has also developed overseas academic  network. It has become a member of Beijing Based the   Network of East  Asia Think Tank (NEAT), East Asia Forum initiated by South Korea, and  Promotion East Asian Studies   in the region organized by Japan
